Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian was born in Canada and raised in the US. She's been a media critic since 1995. She founded Feminist Frequency, a site that features videos and comments discussing the depictions of females in pop media. Anita Sarkeesian is an award-winning Canadian-American feminist media critic as well as blogger. Feminist Frequency examines the way women are represented in the pop culture. Destroying stereotypes about women are her main focus. However, Sarkeesian also discusses issues of specific harassment of women on the internet and for other groups which are left out. With a master's in social and political thought from York University Sarkeesian is also an extremely sought-after public speaker and she has delivered speech at the TEDxWomen Festival and the United Nations' Broadband Working Group on Gender. When she was a student at the university she became fascinated by the issue of gender and rights for women at an early stage. An ambitious woman who wanted to create a web series that examined the gender representation of video games, she was targeted by an internet-based campaign. The attack did not deter her instead it made her more determined as a feminist media critic. Many awards have been presented to her for all of the contribution she has contributed to. Anita Sarkeesian won awards for her efforts as a critique of media and also founded Feminist Frequency. The non-profit investigates women's representation in popular culture of today.
